Autumn tasks in the grarden

  • Monitor weather forecasts.  If frost is due cover sensitive plants with sacking, straw or netting.
  • Prepare soil for next year - Add compost and dig over heavy soil over the autumn months
  • Cuttings can be taken from shrubs
  • Do not cut grass as often and raise the cutting height
  • Aerate, rake and top dress lawns to remove any moss
  • Plant trees and shrubs
  • Trim hedges
  • Collect seeds in say a paper enveloped and store in an airtight container
  • Plant spring flowering garden bulbs
  • Plant spring cabbage, overwintering onions, garlic
  • Clean old plant pots and seed trays
  • Maintain garden tools
  • Provide food for wildlife, particularly birds
  • Try building a hedgehog box
  • Make a leaf pile for hibernating mammals and ground feeding birds
