Autumn soil preparation

Don’t stop weeding! Autumn weeding done now will save time in the spring. Roots thicken and spread over the winter months, making them more of a problem when the weather warms up in March. And chickweed can set flower and set seed even in November!

Autumn is the ideal time for soil preparation in borders and raised beds as this allows the soil to be broken down by frosts and rain. Start by removing any weeds, digging over the soil and adding organic material such as compost, leaf mould and composted bark.
