Growing winter vegetables
An Autumn planting of vegetables and salads is practicable in
areas that don't get very hard winters. There are some hardy vegetables
that can put up with British winters, ensuring that you have a supply of
vegetables throughout the winter months. Try spring onions, broad beans (Aquadulce
Claudia’ is one of the best for autumn sowings and is quick to establish), peas
(varieties such as Pea ‘Kelvedon Wonder’ and Pea ‘Meteor’ are particularly
hardy), kale, garlic, onions and shallots, leeks, parsnips and cabbage, winter
(perpetual) spinach and varieties of hardy lettuce such Valdor and Arctic King.
