Growing garlic in autumn/winter

Generally garlic needs a long growing season and can benefit from a cold spell so can be started now.

Planting in the ground - Garlic prefers a sunny position and well drained soil. You can dig in compost which will  help drainage and provide nutrients. Split the bulb into individual cloves and plant each clove about 30 cm (6 inches) apart and about 2.5 cm (1 inch) below the surface of the soil. Plant with the pointed end facing up so that the bulb is below the soil surface.  As birds may pull up your garlic after is has been planted it is a good idea to cover the area with netting.

Planting in containers and pots - Pots need to be 20 cm (8 inches in diameter) and of a similar depth. Fill the pot with a multi purpose compost and add a little fertiliser. Do not plant too close to the edge of the container or pot to allow space for the bulbs to swell as they grow.
